After many years of cycling and lots of very random training sessions, I met with John after experiencing his expertise doing my bike fit as I had heard that he was one of the most experienced coaches around……..and I’m glad I did!
There is a difference between a ‘trainer’ and a ‘coach’ and John falls slap bang in the Coach model……..he is vastly experienced in what to do, how to do it, when to do it but what’s important for me is WHY I do it and the implications of what I do!
John consulted with me to fully understand what I was looking for and why and explained what he could do for me.
As well as the very structured, accurate and ongoing programme that I follow that is absolutely based on me as an individual, John offers support and advise on an ongoing basis and motivates me both on tough days and the good days and always openly provided feedback and progression goals.
I’ve set personal best times across all distances of TT’s this year (10, 25, 50 and 100) and my progression is clearly mapped and monitored so I dont have to think……..John does all the work and its fantastic so I can just concentrate on training! The testing that we go through backs up the plans too with facts and figures which is the science and analysis that John monitors.
John is also very adaptable to what I want to do and always makes sure he knows what I have coming up and amends any plans if needs be.
By far this is the best thing I have ever done for my cycling and I only wish I had done it sooner!

Coaching is a very individual personal thing & what works for one athlete doesn’t for another. I don’t need a coach to give me a programme for motivational purposes, to get me out the door training. I need a coach for the finer details of training, to look at the bigger picture of what my realistic goals are & what the best way to attain these are. Finer details is where John as a coach excels. His experience, attention to detail & genuine desire to try & help people be the best they can be always shines through.
Having raced only one full season of triathlon previously I was aware approaching a busy & important race season which included Europeans and World Championships 10 weeks apart of the difficulties which occur due to constantly tapering or recovering & how to still be able to train productively within those weeks.
John was able to adjust my training schedule according to how I was performing at training as well as how I felt and was always willing to be flexible & re-jig sessions which is vital….things can’t be set in stone weeks in advance as sometimes real life things, work / illness / personal life get in the way!
In my second season racing in triathlon I have achieved 5th place at age group Europeans in Geneva and at World Championships in Chicago. These are results I am very proud of, have taken a lot of hard work but also been a lot of fun. However, they wouldn’t have happened without John spotting the potential in me & giving the initial encouragement & guidance to get me very addicted to such a fantastic sport. This led to a team effort where John taught me the skills required to be a pretty decent age group triathlete and got me the fittest I have ever been! I look forward to a winter of goal specific training and Europeans early next year in May.
